Kinesio Taping Technique for Post-Accident Pain
If you have recently been in an accident resulting in serious injury, there may be a solution to your pain: Kinesio taping. This therapy can help alleviate pain, encourage healing, increase mobility, enhance range of motion, and get you back to living your normal life pain-free!
Sound too good to be true? Learn about some of the benefits and the Kinesio taping technique that we use at Impact Med Zephyrhills to see if it is right for you.
What is Kinesio Tape?
Kinesio tape is different from other forms of injury taping methods in that other methods require layers of pre-tape to be applied to the skin surface before application. Also, some traditional forms of tape used on injuries can be stiff and can also cause compression and skin irritation to already delicate injured areas.
Kinesio tape is made from cotton and is latex-free which allows for full and unrestricted motion of injured muscles and joints following an accident. Kinesio tape was designed to mimic the outer layer of the skin and when properly applied it provides functional support and fosters lymphatic drainage.

Benefits of Kinesio Taping
Kinesio taping is a modality that helps foster lymphatic drainage in an affected part of a patient’s body and corrects any faulty interactions that are occurring between the skin, muscles, joints, and tendons. This results in increased muscle strength and mobility.
Kinesio taping also works by blocking pain receptors from being sent to the brain. If these pain messages aren’t received, then your muscles will loosen, and spasms and pain will decrease significantly. Pain constricts in affected areas, but if that pain is removed, blood will have the freedom to flow, allowing more movement.
Kinesio taping has many benefits and can enhance your healing post-accident. These include, but are not limited to:
Pain Relief
One of the most significant advantages to Kinesio taping post-accident is pressure reduction. Kinesio tape suppresses the brain’s pain receptors, so it doesn’t receive pain signals from the affected regions, causing those muscles and joints to relax.
This allows for greater mobility, fosters faster recovery, and offers a more relaxed treatment experience.
Joint Stabilization
Kinesio taping can help stabilize and provide support to joints as patients heal, while still allowing them to move through their intended range of motion.
Scar Tissue Management
Managing scar tissue is a common use of Kinesio taping following an accident as healing after trauma post-accident can often result in the formation of scar tissue which often hinders mobility and range of movement.
Kinesio taping gives scar tissue a stretch, thereby increasing mobility and range of motion.
Less Swelling
Injuries sustained in an accident can result in swelling and Kinesio tape helps to decrease this swelling by limiting the pressure between the skin and tissues underneath; effectively allowing fluid to travel freely and fostering movement.

What to Expect with Kinesio Taping
At your initial appointment at Impact Med Zephyrhills, our physical therapists will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your injuries to see if Kinesio taping will be the right choice to include in your treatment plan.
If we decide that Kinesio would be beneficial for you, we will decide which configuration of Kinesio tape is best for you. For Kinesio tape to work most effectively, it must be applied strategically. Generally, we wrap Kinesio tape following muscle movement.
The best wrapping technique will change depending on the part of your body that was injured in your accident. We are trained to utilize single “I” shaped strips, configurations of “X” or “Y”, or other specialized shapes of Kinesio tape to help promote healing, reduce pain, and decrease the inflammation that you are experiencing post-accident.
